Hello there,

About a year ago I asked for help getting fit for my first soccer season at the age of 24 and got some really good advice and workouts to try. So I did the workouts and am in much better shape than last year.

A year on and I have a team, been to a couple of training sessions and really enjoy it. However my very first match is coming up on Sunday and I am really nervous about it. Stupid I know but starting the game at 25 has left me this way.

Is there anyone who can offer me any advice on how best to prepare for my first game, or how best to overcome nerves before and probably during the match?

Thanks for reading.

Hey Mark,

I used to box competitively when I was younger and decided to jump back in to the ring last year to see if I still had it in me. I hadn't competed for almost 15 years and wasn't sure what the outcome would be so needless to say, I started to get a bit more nervous as the fight got closer. I trained harder than I ever had and was in terrific shape so I wasn't too worried about my conditioning but let me tell you.. during the last couple days before the fight I was so nervous I could barely eat, sleep or function at all. I remember the night of the fight though, knowing that there was no turning back and that it was really going to happen, a weird calm came over me and I just went with it. I can't really explain, I don't have any really solid advice for you.. but realize that you are not alone. Everyone gets nervous/anxious whatever you want to call it. I'm sure some people can deal with it better than others but I've read multiple stories about professional athletes that still get sick before their competitions even after years of experience.

Keep in mind brother, this is going to everybody's first game of the season so there will probably be a lot of nervous energy on the field! And don't forget that you have an entire team to support you and help you get through it!

Good luck!

Hi Ben

Thanks for the advice bud, it's helped put things into perspective.
I keep visualising the game and getting the ball, I can't stop my mind wandering at the moment. I'm starting to get excited for it as well as nervous though which must be a good thing.

I'll post an update Sunday night to let you know how I did haha.

Cheers,
Mark

Update:

First taste of soccer was amazing.
Got beat 6-3 off a very good side but the team played well.
I came on in the second half and the nerves went.
Took an elbow to the mouth but wasn't bothered at all.
Only thing I need to do is get fitter and stronger.

All in all I loved every second of it.

Hey Mark!

Congrats on getting your feet wet again brother! I'm sure you'll get more and more comfortable with game and soon your nerves won't bother you at all!

How sore were you the next couple of days after?

Well I've done something to my knee so I'm very sore at the moment.
Not sure what I've done but its tight at the back of my knee and I can't do much training.

The next morning it took alot to get out of bed! haha but I made sure I got to the gym just for a small upper body work out.

Hey Mark,

You might have strained some tendons and ligaments or you might have just strained some smaller stabilizing muscles around the knee that you haven't used for quite a few years. Either way try to keep moving over the next few days, make sure you're icing your knee as much as you can throughout the day and if you have anyone on your team that knows anything about foam rolling, get them to show you how to roll out your IT Band, quads and hamstrings. The foam roller doesn't feel very pleasant but will definitely help break down all the scar tissue and gunk that has built up over the years and really help to loosen up your knee and reduce the pain!
