Marlaena and I were at the gym over the weekend and started filming a series of different interval workouts using Mar's new hot pink GymBoss Interval Timer!
This workout (which will be added to the site in several weeks) is a short, intense 4 minute Tabata interval that supersets 2 different body weight exercises, the squat and the burpee. This is a challenging workout that can be done almost anywhere and is suitable for all fitness levels.
Give it a shot and let me know how it goes! And if you're really competitive, count your reps as you go and add up your score when you're done!

We're going to a BBQ tomorrow afternoon at CrossFit Vancouver to kick off the Summer and I thought I'd share the recipe for the salad that I'm going to be taking with us!
Romaine with Oranges and Pecans
2 Heads Romaine Lettuce (wash and cut into bit-size pieces)
3/4 to 1 Cup Pecan Halves - Toasted (175 ml)
2 Oranges Peeled and Sliced
1/4 Cup Vinegar (50 ml)
1/4 Cup Sugar (125 ml)
1 Cup Olive Oil (250 ml)
1 Tsp. Salt (5 ml)
1 Small Red Onion
1 Tsp. Dry Mustard (5 ml)
2 Tbsps. Water (30 ml)
Place lettuce, oranges and pecans in salad bowl. Combine vinegar, olive oil, sugar, salt, red onion, mustard and water in a blender. Blend until it's very well mixed. You can make the dressing ahead of time and refrigerate until you're ready to toss and serve the salad. And if you don't use all of the dressing you can use as a dip for veggies or fresh fruit!

Grandmother and nutrition enthusiast, Joann Bruso, decided to do a little "at-home" science experiment to see what would happen to a McDonald's Happy Meal if she left it sitting out for an entire year. She wanted to see how long it would take for the burger and fries to break down and decompose and after 12 long months she took a picture so she could compare the differences.
As you can see from the photos above, after an entire year of sitting on a shelf in her home office, the Happy Meal looks almost exactly the same way it did the day she bought it! Bruso said on her blog, Baby Bites, that she was a bit worried at first that the Happy Meal would start to rot and make her office smell bad after a few weeks but said "It NEVER smelled bad. The food did NOT decompose. It did NOT get moldy, at all."
That's pretty scary if you think about it... just imagine how long that must sit in your belly after you eat it! Kind of makes me nauseous and will definitely dissuade me from ever being tempted by the smell of those fries again! Here's another small excerpt from Joann Bruso's blog.
The next time you're tempted to purchase a Happy Meal for your child, think about these photos. Food is SUPPOSED to decompose, go bad and smell foul... eventually. When I was a kid, I remember our garbage pail for the left over food scraps was kept by our back door. After a couple of days, flies deposited their larvae (maggots) in the meat. When I would lift the lid, I would see the recently hatched maggots wiggling on the putrid mess. A fly never bothered to land on the tiny hamburger patty on my office shelf.
Food is broken down into its essential nutrients in our bodies and turned into fuel. Our children grow strong bodies, when they eat real food. Flies ignore a Happy Meal and microbes don't decompose it, then your child's body can't properly metabolize it either. Now you know why it's called "junk food."

Seaman Jason Armstrong from the U.S. Navy broke three pull-up world records this past Monday in honor of Memorial day. He did it to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project which helps seriously wounded soldiers. He managed to raise over $5000 which worked out to be about a dollar fifty a pull-up, good work brother!
You have to watch the video below and see it with your own eyes to really appreciate this incredible feat because this guy is insane! He set a new six hour record with 2,465 pull-ups (average 865 an hour) then kept going and broke the 12 hour and 24 hour records as well. He finished with 3,186 pull-ups in 11 hours and 58 minutes and 3,376 pull-ups after 15 hours and 48 minutes. And those are all straight arm pull-ups with perfect form!
Pull-ups are one of the exercises I've been working on a lot this past year but after watching that video clip I realize I have a lot more work ahead of me if I want to get anywhere close to those kind of numbers!

I normally wouldn't write about something so gruesome but I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one.. it's almost too crazy to believe!
A so called "cage fighter" from California named, Jarrod Wyatt, is accused of brutally murdering his training partner after they drank some tea that had been spiked with some psychedelic mushrooms. A witness claims that after they both ingested the mushrooms, Wyatt became paranoid that his friend was possessed by the Devil so he cut open a giant hole in his chest and ripped out his heart while it was still beating! WTF?!?!?!
After he tore his heart out, he wasn't quite finished. Wyatt also cut off his tongue, tore off most of his face and removed several other organs which he then burned in a wood burning fireplace because he was fearful his friend was still alive and he "needed to stop the Devil". When police arrived at the scene, Wyatt was apparently standing over the corpse buck naked and covered in blood from head to toe in what the officers described as a scene from a horror movie!
A lawyer representing Wyatt is trying to claim that his client was in a hallucinogenic, self induced psychotic state at the time and had no control over his actions. "He was trying to silence the Devil" claims James Fallman. "I think he was having psychotic fit based on the mushrooms he had." Wyatt has been charged with first degree murder and torture. Torture was added to the murder charge because his victim was still alive when his heart was removed and bled to death as a result.
This is such a crazy story and is almost too much to believe but I don't really see how it's relevant that this guy was supposedly a mixed martial arts fighter. As if that somehow made him more prone to such a violent outburst or had something to do with this gruesome attack. He could have easily been a plumber, school teacher, stock broker or taxi cab driver, just look at what happened in Britain this past week. Anyways my heart goes out to the victims family.. this is a very sad and unfortunate event and I really hope that justice is served.
And kids, say NO to drugs!
