I went down to Seattle this past weekend to attend a Hardstyle Kettlebell Certification workshop. The workshop was held at the
Kettlebility studio which is owned by RKC instructor Andrea U-Shi Chang. There were about 25 people or so in attendance and the workshop was taught by Master RKC instructor
Brett Jones from Pittsburgh, PA and assisted by several senior and level II RKC instructors.
I had little exposure to the kettlebell before this workshop other than a few exercises like the deadlift, American (overhead) swing, bent over row and shoulder press. After the first fifteen minutes of the workshop, I realized that I really knew nothing about the russian kettlebell and it's true potential.
We started the day working on various breathing techniques and deadlift form then moved on to the swing and single arm swing. I was really impressed with Brett Jones and his knowledge of the kettlebell and mechanics of the body. He was incredibly articulate with his instruction and very strict with his form which I really appreciated. We learned the goblet squat after the swing and finished the day with the Turkish get-up. I thought going into the workshop that the 3 lifts would be relatively easy to learn but I was wrong. He went into such great detail with every exercise and there was so much new information to process and so many things to remember as the day progressed.
We were tested on all 3 exercises at the end of the workshop. I have to admit that I haven't been that nervous in a very long time but I managed to successfully complete all three of my kettlebell exercises without any troubles and received my Hardstyle Kettlebell certification! I am so excited and feel really proud about this new accomplishment and even though this experience was incredibly humbling, it left me hungry for more! I have set some new personal goals and now hope to challenge for my
RKC, the Russian Kettlebell Challenge instructors certification by the end of 2010!

Has anyone else heard about the class action lawsuit that was filed against
Jillian Michaels and the makers of her super, duper fat burner? Apparently the Biggest Loser trainer and ThinCare, the company that manufacturers the product, are the subject of a class-action lawsuit that was filed on February 9. The suit claims that Jillian Michaels "Maximum Strength Calorie Control" dietary supplement, which contains coffee bean extract and guarana, does not actually decrease appetite or cause weight loss as it claims. The lawsuit states: "Ms. Michaels knows better - taking two pills before eating does not miraculously cause weight loss."
First off, I don't know why someone would really think that just because she endorses a product that it would magically decrease appetite and help you shed pounds. And secondly, I really don't know why Jillian Michaels would jump on board with a "quick fix" supplement company when she is a trainer who supposedly prides herself on integrity, hard work and determination.
Anyways, good luck Jillian, and if you get out of this without tarnishing your reputation too much then maybe you might want to think twice next time before lending your name and face to a company that is out for profit, not well-being!

The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics wrapped up yesterday and the Olympic cauldron was extinguished last night at the end of the Closing Ceremonies. The Winter Games lasted a total of 17 exciting days and it was definitely one of the coolest experiences that I've had in my life! Especially the fact that it all happened right in my own backyard! Not only did this nation come together and show it's deep rooted patriotism and pride but we also set a new record for most gold medals won by a host or any other nation in the Winter Games and were able to cap it all off with a glorious win in overtime against Team U.S.A. (sorry to all of my friends down south... Miller played awesome but this was meant to be for Team Canada!)
I am so proud to call myself Canadian! And I am so proud of all of the great athletes that call this country home along with all of the other athletes from around the world that came here to showcase their skill, determination and passion for sport. I have never before been so inspired and hope that many others much younger than I am have been inspired too! I mean really.. how could you not be after watching Sidney Crosby score that overtime Olympic gold medal winning, record setting goal!
Good job Canada!
